Thomas Spurgeon “Tom” Carte
March 14, 1937 – April 18, 2020

Thomas Spurgeon “Tom” Carte, 83, passed away peacefully on April 18th, 2020, at Camellia Gardens Rehabilitation Center in Thomasville, GA. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be announced at a later date.

Mr. Carte was born on March 14, 1937, in Charleston, WV, to the late Clyde Carte and Lola Roxola Spurgeon. He served his country in the United States Army. Tom graduated from West Virginia University and soon moved to California where he worked in the insurance industry. Tom made his way to Maui, Hawaii, where he worked at Kapalua Golf Resort. During a college reunion in Huntington, WVA, he rekindled a relationship with Mary Gil Hollandsworth, whom he met while in college. The two were married on December 28th, 1985. They moved to Maui where they lived for the next 14 years. Wanting to be closer to family, they moved to Charlotte, NC in 1999. In 2012 they moved to Thomasville, GA, where they resided at Southern Pines Senior Center. They were married for 34 years until his passing. Tom had a blended family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Gil Hollandsworth and a combined 6 children and 12 grandchildren.

He was an avid golfer for most of his life and loved spending time with family. He was an excellent bridge player and notorious crossword puzzle enthusiast. He loved the Carolina Panthers and anything related to West Virginia. He was lovingly called “Papa Tom” by all of his grandchildren and younger family members. He will be greatly missed.

Survivors include: his wife, Gil Carte of Thomasville, GA; children, Jon D. Carte (Leah) of Sanford, NC, Val J. Carte (Veronica) of San Antonio, TX, Shannon Watson (Erika) of St. Teresa, FL¬¬; Chris Watson (Laura) of Ponte Vedra, FL, Jason Watson (Melissa) of Charlotte, NC, Kelly Watson of Santa Monica, CA; grandchildren, Calli Corbyn Carte of San Antonio, TX, Jordyn Taylor Carte of San Antonio, TX, Jonathan T Carte (Merris) of Wichita KS, Allison E. Carte of Fayetteville, NC, Christian M. Carte of Cape May, NJ, Anna Lee Watson of New Orleans, LA, Caroline Kelly Watson of Raleigh, NC, Mary Kate Watson, Lancaster, PA, Jackson Watson, Natalie Watson, Adeline Watson, London Watson. He was preceded in death by his parents.
