Sylvia Whitfield Collins
September 10, 1940 – August 21, 2023

Sylvia Whitfield Collins, 82, of Cairo, Georgia passed away on Monday, August 21, 2023, at Camellia Gardens of Life Care in Thomasville.  She was born on September 10, 1940 in Cairo, to the late Charles and Kate Dixon Whitfield.  Growing up in Cairo, she was a 1958 graduate of Cairo High School and later attended Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College.  She married Russell V. “R.V.” Collins, Jr. on April 14, 1963, and they raised their two children, Renee Collins Jones and Russell Vann Collins, III, in Cairo, where she worked for the City of Cairo in the utilities department for over 20 years.  Known as “MawMaw” to her grandson, she will always be remembered for her delicious southern cooking, never missing important milestones, and always sending cards for special occasions.

She was preceded in death by her husband, R.V., her daughter Renee, three sisters: Merle Henderson, Rebecca VanMeter, Vannye Dady, and three brothers: Carroll Whitfield, Hubert Whitfield, and Clyde Whitfield.

In addition to her son, Russell, Mrs. Collins is survived by her Son-in-Law, Don Jones of Tifton, Grandson Craig (Rae) Jones of Tifton, Sister Peggy (Donald) Walden of Cairo, great granddaughters, Annie and Betsie Jones of Tifton, and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Thursday, August 24, 2023, in the Chapel of Clark Funeral Home, with Elder Thad Marshall officiating.  Mrs. Collins will be laid to rest in Greenwood Cemetery in Cairo.  The family will receive friends at graveside following the service.

Active pallbearers will be Tracy Walden, Rodney Whitley, John Long, Jimmy Scarbrough, Mike Gainous and Daryl Johnson.
