Sonya L. Burton
April 23, 1969 – July 13, 2026
Master Sergeant Sonya L. Burton, 57, passed away on July 13, 2026. Born on April 23, 1969, in Tallahassee, Florida, and raised in Cairo, Georgia, Sonya lived a life defined by service, generosity, and love for those around her.
Sonya entered the United States Air Force in November 1990 and proudly served for more than 24 years before retiring in September 2014. Her background was in Life Support, known today as Aircrew Flight Equipment, and over the course of her career she completed a three-year special duty tour with Aerospace Physiology and a one-year remote deployment to Kabul, Afghanistan, where she helped train the Afghan Air Force. She also served as an Aircrew Continuation Training Instructor, CPR Instructor, Group Resource Advisor, Unit Deployment Manager, Group Training Manager, Squadron Safety Representative, and Self Aid Buddy Care Instructor. Throughout her career, she was stationed at Mather AFB in Sacramento, California; Randolph AFB in San Antonio, Texas; and Moody AFB in Valdosta, Georgia.
Sonya’s dedication to her country was reflected in the many honors she earned, including the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal (three Oak Leaf Clusters), the Air Force Achievement Medal (two Oak Leaf Clusters), the Meritorious Unit Award, the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award (six Oak Leaf Clusters), the Air Force Good Conduct Medal (six Oak Leaf Clusters), the National Defense Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Air Force Overseas Ribbon (Long), the Air Force Expeditionary Service Ribbon with Gold Border, the Air Force Longevity Service Award (four Oak Leaf Clusters), the USAF NCO PME Graduate Ribbon, the NATO Medal (two Oak Leaf Clusters), the Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon (Rifle), the Air Force Training Ribbon, and recognition as a Basic Military Training Honor Graduate. She was incredibly proud of everything she achieved in uniform, and rightly so — her record reflects a career of discipline, leadership, and genuine care for the people she served alongside.
Beyond her military career, Sonya was known simply for the way she made people feel. She had friends all over the world and was loved by everyone fortunate enough to know her. She was hilarious and had the best sense of humor, always doing silly things just to make others laugh, and her laugh itself was iconic. She was endlessly giving, always the one making sure everyone around her was fed, comfortable, and cared for. She loved the beach and cherished her home, lovingly named “Burton’s Backyard Bay,” where she found peace and made countless memories. She was a devoted daddy’s girl, deeply devoted to her family, and adored her animals, who were as much a part of her family as anyone.
Sonya was happily married to the love of her life, Clinton Burton, and the two were approaching eleven wonderful years together and coming up on their 10th marriage anniversary Dec 1st this year. They met in Venice, Florida, and from that moment on were truly soulmates, hardly ever apart. Clinton was born nine months after Sonya, and those who knew them best always said he was made just for her.
Sierra Couture was Sonya’s only child, and Sonya was incredibly proud of her and loved every moment she had with her daughter. She was always her daughter’s number one cheerleader, forever encouraging her to accomplish anything she put her mind to, and was truly the best mama a girl could ask for. The two were fortunate to spend the last two years living together, and Sonya cherished every moment of that time. She will be missed on throughout every moment of her daughter’s life still to come.
Sonya was a proud breast cancer survivor and was in remission, facing that chapter of her life with the same strength and determination that defined her military career. Sonya was a devoted sister, and the daily check-ins with her sister, Donna Ouzts, will be deeply missed. She also loved her longtime best friend, Catherine Dowdy, and was thankful to be back closer to her in recent years.
She is survived by her husband, Clinton Burton, and daughter, Sierra Couture, both of Cairo; her sister, Donna Ouzts (Caylor), of Cairo; her brother, Lennie Wade (Debra), of Crestview, FL; nieces Kayla Gainous (Joel) and Kimber Ouzts, both of Cairo, Chris Wade (Tammy) of Crawfordville, Tamara Wade, and Carolyn Wade, of Crestview, FL; great-nieces and nephews Kody Marie Gainous, of Cairo; Caralina, Abbygail Stevens, and Colt Wade, of Crestview, FL; and Daxton, Owen, and Blakely Wade, of Crawfordville, FL; a very special uncle, Phillip Singletary; and her best friend, Catherine Dowdy.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lewis and Joyce (Singletary) Wade.
Sonya’s spirit — generous, proud, and full of love — will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
