James Alexandre Herring, Jr.
September 10, 1947 – February 8, 2024

A memorial celebration for James ‘Jim’ Alexandre Herring, Jr., 76, of Cairo, GA, will be at 2:00 p.m., Friday, February 16, 2024, at the Chapel of Clark Funeral Home, Cairo, GA. Military Honors will be presented.  Mr. Herring passed away at his home on Thursday, February 8, 2024.

Mr. Herring was born on September 10, 1947, in Montgomery, AL, to the late James Alexandre Herring and Edith Doris Finley Herring.  He graduated from Leon High School in 1965 and went on to serve his country in the United States Army and fight in the Vietnam War.  Upon his return, he served as a Leon County Sheriff Deputy for a few years before pursuing entrepreneurial endeavors.  Later on, he worked for the State of Florida as a mediator before taking a position as a lead investigator at a prestigious law firm in Tallahassee. On March 20, 1995, he married Sharon Smith Herring, who survives.  Among many things, Jim was an avid hunter, a captain, international traveler, lover of animals, and an adoring father. He found his solace in the great outdoors, whether it was on the water or in the woods.  He passed away at home surrounded by his loved ones.

Survivors include: his wife, Sharon Herring of Cairo, GA; sons, Shannon Herring (Deborah) of Warner Robins, GA, Jason Mercer (Amy) of Thomasville, GA; daughters, Megan K. Herring (James) of Tallahassee, FL, Ashley Chastain (Allen) of Ochlocknee, GA, Heather Mercer of Ochlocknee, GA, Jennifer Mercer of Ochlocknee, GA; and grandchildren, Samantha Herring (Tyler) of Maryland, Catelyn Herring of Warner Robins, GA, Landri Mercer, Harris Mercer, Pace Mercer, all of Thomasville, GA, Lindsey O’Connell of Clermont, FL, Madison Mercer, Morgan Chastain, both of Ochlocknee, GA, CJ Collins of Cairo, GA, James Collins of Ochlocknee, GA.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Frank Herring.
