Carolyn Lucile Pharis Day
March 15, 1931 – September 15, 2020

Carolyn Lucile Pharis Day, 89, of Valdosta, GA passed away on Tuesday, September 15, 2020, at South Georgia Medical Center in Valdosta. She was born on March 15, 1931 in Cairo, GA to the late Mary Rozar and Thomas Jordan Pharis. She graduated as an honor student from her high school, the Valedictorian of her Junior college class, and graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Florida. She retired as a schoolteacher where she worked with many schools associated with the Dixie County School System, Lanier County School System, and the Ben Hill County School System. After her retirement she enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by her sister, Wyolene Fain and brothers-in-law, Fonzo Fain and Gerald Van Brunt.

Her survivors include her loving husband of 65 years, Reverend Paul Day, Sr., her brother, Dr. Thomas “Tommy” Pharis and wife, Vicky, her sister, Vonda Van Brunt, her daughter, Carolyn Mitchell and husband, Mitch, her son, Paul Day, Jr. and wife, Lisa. Lucile was blessed with many grandchildren – Trey Mitchell (Kristin), Todd Mitchell (Megan), Marisa Day, and Tanner Day. She was further blessed with many great-grandchildren including Tripp Mitchell, Katelyn Mitchell, Tori Mitchell, Brody Hurst, Kami Mitchell, Tristin Mitchell, and Kroy Mitchell. Lucile also had a host of nieces and nephews, other family, and she was loved by many friends.

Lucile enjoyed many hobbies such as growing beautiful roses, fishing, and being with her family making special memories. As a teacher, she was gifted with the ability to lead children toward high achievement, and she also served alongside her husband in his pastorates ministering among churches over many years of Christian service. The scriptures her family will remember her by are found in Proverbs. “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.” (Proverbs 3:5-6 KJV) “Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her.” (Proverbs 31:28 ESV)

Ministers officiating the service are Reverend Jim Weaver of Pine Level Baptist Church in Cairo, Dr. Charles Owens of First Baptist, Valdosta, and Reverend Lester Williams, retired of Lake Park.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that monetary contributions be made to the Paul and Lucile Day Memorial Scholarship Fund. Contributions can be sent to the Grady County Baptist Association located at 227 GA Hwy 112 North, Cairo, Georgia 39827.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, September 17, 2020 at the First Baptist Church of Valdosta. The graveside service will be held at 3:00 PM on Thursday, September 17, 2020 in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Cairo, GA. The family will receive friends at the church from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM on Thursday. Due to the pandemic, the family requests that everyone wear a mask and practice social distancing.
