Hazel Nowell Brittain
October 26, 1937 – February 27, 2016

Funeral services for Hazel Nowell Brittain, 78, of Midlothian, VA, formerly of Cairo, GA, are at 11:00 a.m., Friday, March 4, 2016, at Gordon Heights Baptist Church, Cairo, GA. Rev. Ron Talley of Hyles Baptist Church, Chesterfield, VA, will officiate. Private family interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Cairo, GA. Mrs. Brittain passed away at Lucy Corr Village in Chesterfield, VA, on Saturday, February 27, 2016.

Active pallbearers will be Jimmy Clark, Daniel Knight, Jessie Knight, Blake Nowell, Nicholas Nowell and Andy Smith.

Mrs. Brittain was born on October 26, 1937, in Cairo, GA, to the late Forcie Barrett and Allie Butler Barrett. On July 13, 1953, she married William S. “Billy” Nowell, who preceded her in death on November 27, 1993. She worked for Ithaca Industries for 30 years in Cairo. In 1994, she married Thurman Brittain and she moved to his home in Virginia. While living there, she worked in children’s daycare at Clover Hill Children’s Center. She was a member of Hyles Baptist Church of Chesterfield, VA; and a former member of Gordon Heights Baptist Church in Cairo, GA. As a loving mother and grandmother, she was always caring for others and not thinking of herself. She loved working in her yards and she was always well dressed wherever she went.

Survivors include: husband, Thurman Brittain of Midlothian, VA; sons, Bobby Nowell of Cairo, GA, Chris Nowell (Tammy) of Cairo, GA; daughters, Cindy Estabrook (Scott) of Cairo, GA, Linda Knight (Chip) of Chesterfield, VA, Kay Cooke (A.J.) of Pelham, GA; 15 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren; step-daughter, Amy Payne (Kevin) of Virginia; step-son, Adam Brittain of Virginia; mother-in-law, Florence Brittain of Chesterfield, VA; sister, Gloria Ponder (Frank) of Cairo, GA; sisters-in-law, Carolyn Barrett of Cairo, GA, Virginia Barrett of Cairo, GA; and a host of nieces and nephews and extended family.

She was preceded in death by: parents; first husband, Billy Nowell; grandson, Clay Anthony; brothers, Lavon Barrett, Winfred Barrett, Ray Barrett; and a sister, Faye Dowell.

The family will receive friends at Gordon Heights Baptist Church on Friday, March 4, 2016, from 10:00 a.m. until the 11:00 a.m. funeral hour.
